In a warren of crumbling buildings, a hospital echoes with the screams of the poor souls within. Inside, there is a woman called Alice. She doesn't remember why she's in such a terrible place. When she announces that she is pregnant, 27-year-old Jane Graham is turned out by her father and rents a room in the top of a squalid boarding house in Fulham, feeling this is all she deserves. She is rescued by her neighbours: Toby, a Jewish writer, John, a jazz musician and even her landlady.
