Siegfried Sassoon

In this classic novel, read from "The Complete Memoirs of George Sherston", George Sherston struggles to overcome shell shock in a military hospital during World War I. He eventually returns to the army and is sent to Palestine and Ireland and finally the Western Front in France.

Siegfried Sassoon's fictionalized autobiography of the period between the early spring of 1916 and the summer of 1917, moves from the trenches to the Fourth Army School and through the Somme. The narrator turns from unquestioning acceptance of the war, to doubting the necessity of the seemingly endless slaughter.
